Gakuji Masui

A temple called Toshun Temple in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Gakuji Masui has Mizunokami kiln in the precincts.

It is often said that "no single piece of pottery is the same", and Mr. Masui's pottery is the best example of this. Rather than perfectly controlling the clay and glaze, the unique expression of the pottery is valued. Currently, he is earnestly working on the possibilities of new creations, using raw materials from Yamaguchi Prefecture and cray from Toshun Temple.

The clay used for this rice bowl is harvested from the hill behind Toshun Temple, where Mr. Masui built his kiln. It all started when he discovered clay soil while clearing the area around his barn.

Mr. Masui says, "I want to express myself using things found in the area."

It can be said that this rice bowl was born from a mysterious connection between the artist Gakuji Masui and the land of Toshun Temple. As a lover of pottery, I can't help but feel that this is the charm of pottery.

It is decorated with a glaze that has a soft expression called makeup ash glaze. It seems to go well with Japanese dishes that are rich in colorful vegetables.

It is a 6.5 inch plate with a diameter of about 17 cm. Since it is a deep dish, juicy dishes are also OK.
